KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 1

2-DAY WEATHER, MARINE & FISHING OUTLOOK

Coverage: Upper South Coast — Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh (-30.2869, 30.7042).

Forecast issued: Monday, 24 August 2026 at 05:00 SAST.

OVERALL OUTLOOK

Monday: Clear and mild, with light north-westerly wind early and a manageable south-easterly swell. A reasonable all-round shore-fishing day, with the better practical windows around the moving tide and early evening.

Tuesday: Still mild, but wind strengthens and turns more southerly. Swell builds modestly and the best opportunities are likely early or in sheltered locations. Check the shorebreak before using rocks or points.

MONDAY — 24 AUGUST 2026

WEATHER & MARINE

  • Temperature: 11.7–21.8°C
  • Rain probability: 0% maximum in the current model; expected rainfall 0 mm
  • Weather: Clear
  • Wind: Mainly north-westerly early, tending north-easterly/easterly later; maximum approximately 13 km/h
  • Possible gusts: Approximately 30 km/h
  • Waves: Approximately 1.28–1.64 m; period 8.6–9.3 seconds
  • Swell: Approximately 1.16–1.64 m, mainly south-southeasterly (around 165°)

Fishing assessment: FAIR TO GOOD. The lighter wind and moderate swell should provide a useful shore window. Fish the moving tide and structure, while keeping an eye on surge around exposed rocks.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

  • High: 01:52 — 4.6 ft / approximately 1.40 m
  • Low: 08:07 — 2.3 ft / approximately 0.70 m
  • High: 14:22 — 4.9 ft / approximately 1.49 m
  • Low: 20:27 — 2.3 ft / approximately 0.70 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR PERIODS

  • Sunrise: 06:22 | Sunset: 17:38
  • Moonrise: 14:09 | Moonset: 03:59
  • Moon phase: Waxing Gibbous (approximately 87% illuminated)
  • Major period 1: 08:03–10:03 (opposing lunar transit)
  • Major period 2: 20:24–22:24 (lunar transit)
  • Minor period 1: 03:29–04:29 (moonset)
  • Minor period 2: 13:38–14:38 (moonrise)

FISHING FOCUS

Shad are the primary focus while the winter run remains active. Work bait or lures around points, beaches and structure where baitfish are present. Garrick, kob and other gamefish are possible around moving water; use appropriate tackle and release undersize or unwanted fish carefully.

TUESDAY — 25 AUGUST 2026

WEATHER & MARINE

  • Temperature: 11.6–21.8°C
  • Rain probability: 12% maximum in the current model; expected rainfall 0 mm
  • Weather: Partly cloudy
  • Wind: Mainly southerly to south-westerly, strengthening during the day; maximum approximately 21 km/h
  • Possible gusts: Approximately 43 km/h
  • Waves: Approximately 1.28–1.92 m; period 9.4–11.1 seconds
  • Swell: Approximately 1.10–1.70 m, mainly southerly (around 170°)

Fishing assessment: FAIR, BEST EARLY OR SHELTERED. The stronger southerly wind and increasing swell may make exposed rocks uncomfortable. Prefer protected beaches and points, and reassess conditions before committing to the water.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

  • High: 02:28 — 5.1 ft / approximately 1.55 m
  • Low: 08:37 — 1.8 ft / approximately 0.55 m
  • High: 14:50 — 5.5 ft / approximately 1.68 m
  • Low: 20:57 — 1.8 ft / approximately 0.55 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR PERIODS

  • Sunrise: 06:21 | Sunset: 17:38
  • Moonrise: 15:07 | Moonset: 04:40
  • Moon phase: Waxing Gibbous (approximately 93% illuminated)
  • Major period 1: 09:15–11:15 (opposing lunar transit, calculated from the astronomical transit)
  • Major period 2: 21:15–23:15 (lunar transit, centred near 22:15)
  • Minor period 1: 04:10–05:10 (moonset)
  • Minor period 2: 14:37–15:37 (moonrise)

FISHING FOCUS

Continue with shad on bait and lures, especially around the early moving water. Garrick and kob remain possible around structure, deeper water and river mouths, but the stronger wind can reduce presentation and comfort. Do not fish exposed rocks if surge is washing across the ledge.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • Angler News SA / East Coast Radio, 20 August 2026, reports that big shad are providing strong action along the KZN coastline as winter winds down.
  • The same report identifies South Coast activity around Aliwal Shoal and surrounding reefs, including quality garrick, tuna and other gamefish, with calmer seas expected to support a productive weekend.
  • A photograph caption in the report records a 6.5 kg shad caught at Tweni on the South Coast and also shows shad and blacktail catches on the mid-South Coast.
  • A Rising Sun Newspapers report dated 19 August 2026 lists Scottburgh Point as popular for sharks, shad and garrick, and Umkomaas River Mouth and Beach as favourites for kob and shad.
  • These are recent public observations and named hotspot guidance, not a guarantee of catches at every Upper South Coast beach. No verified same-morning, town-specific catch log for Amanzimtoti–Scottburgh was located.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather and marine values are model guidance from Open-Meteo for the Scottburgh representative point and may differ along the coastline. Tides are predictions for Scottburgh; Surfline displays the nearby Durban tide port and notes that accuracy varies with the distance from the spot. Moon and sun data are astronomical calculations for the Scottburgh coordinates. Tuesday’s major solunar windows are calculated around the astronomical lunar transit; minor windows are centred on moonset and moonrise.

Public fishing observations are drawn from recent media reports and published hotspot information. They are not live catch verification. Always check local sea state, rip currents, shorebreak, access and weather warnings before fishing or launching. Follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.
