However, do not let a good solunar rating override the sea state: favour only protected water, and avoid exposed ledges, surf-zone wading and the St Lucia mouth unless the actual launch and sandbar are confirmed safe.

Fishing focus
If conditions are genuinely sheltered, fish the moving water for shad/elf near first light or around structure and bait. Garrick and kob remain possible rather than verified at these locations. Avoid the exposed St Lucia beach and Mapelane rocks in strong gusts; do not launch at the estuary mouth without an on-site assessment.
CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS
A public 4u2Stay Maphelane Bay post says the bay was coming alive early, with anglers catching shad along the shoreline. The fetched page does not display a publication date, so it is treated as recent public context rather than verified same-morning evidence for this run.
The North Coast Courier’s FishEagle report dated 20 August 2026 says shad remained the main target for early-morning surf anglers, with 1–2 kg fish and larger reports from Tugela Mouth. It also reports plentiful garrick from Margate to Richards Bay and records a range of catches from the St Lucia Queens of the Ocean tournament.
The Go Fish Zululand Classic is advertised for St Lucia from 28–30 August 2026, confirming active local fishing-event interest; that listing is not a catch report.
Current status: No independently verified same-morning catch log specifically for the St Lucia Estuary, St Lucia beach or Mapelane coast was found.
