KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 1

5-DAY WEATHER, MARINE & FISHING OUTLOOK

Coverage: Upper South Coast — Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh (-30.2869, 30.7042).

Issue window: Thursday through Monday, 3–7 September 2026.

Issued: Thursday, 3 September 2026 at 04:00 SAST.

Issue key: REGION1-THURSDAY-2026-09-03

WINDOW AT A GLANCE

Thursday–Friday: A strong deterioration is expected, with wind, rain and swell peaking Friday. Exposed shore fishing and small-craft launching should be postponed.

Saturday–Monday: Wind eases on Saturday and Sunday, while wave energy remains elevated. Conditions are more usable only in suitable protected water, with a renewed swell and stronger gust potential by Monday.

THURSDAY — 3 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 15.2–33.5°C
  • Rain: 0% maximum probability; approximately 0.0 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly west (271°), maximum approximately 34.8 km/h; gusts to 68.8 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.64–2.66 m, period 7.8–11.9 seconds; direction mainly south-southeast (151°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.26–1.60 m, period 5.5–10.6 seconds; direction mainly south-southeast (162°)

Marine/fishing rating: POOR to MARGINAL on the open coast. Strong wind and building swell make exposed rocks, ledges and small-craft launching unsuitable for most of the day. Sheltered water may offer limited opportunities only after a fresh local check.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

Low 00:48 — 0.49 m · High 06:50 — 1.62 m · Low 12:57 — 0.55 m · High 19:14 — 1.62 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR

Sunrise 06:11 · Sunset 17:43 · Moonrise — · Moonset 09:40 · Waning Gibbous, 60% illuminated

Major: 03:31–05:31 and 15:31–17:31. Minor: 08:40–10:40 and 23:27–01:27 (continues into Friday).

FRIDAY — 4 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 14.8–20.1°C
  • Rain: 100% maximum probability; approximately 9.0 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly south-southwest (202°), maximum approximately 30.7 km/h; gusts to 59.8 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 2.26–3.18 m, period 7.7–9.1 seconds; direction mainly south (170°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.32–3.02 m, period 6.5–9.5 seconds; direction mainly south-southeast (167°)

Marine/fishing rating: VERY POOR — POSTPONE EXPOSED FISHING. Heavy rain, strong gusts and a large swell produce the most hazardous marine combination in the window. Do not fish exposed rocks or launch small craft; reassess only in genuinely protected water after daylight.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

Low 01:31 — 0.64 m · High 07:38 — 1.46 m · Low 13:46 — 0.73 m · High 20:11 — 1.43 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR

Sunrise 06:09 · Sunset 17:44 · Moonrise 00:27 · Moonset 10:32 · Waning Crescent, 49% illuminated

Major: 04:31–06:31 and 16:31–18:31. Minor: 09:32–11:32 and 00:27–02:27 (continues into Saturday).

SATURDAY — 5 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 15.0–18.1°C
  • Rain: 69% maximum probability; approximately 0.5 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (55°), maximum approximately 13.1 km/h; gusts to 28.4 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 2.00–3.00 m, period 9.1–9.8 seconds; direction mainly southeast (148°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.50–2.60 m, period 7.0–8.9 seconds; direction mainly southeast (153°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL to FAIR. Wind eases, but the sea remains elevated. The morning may become fishable in protected areas if the shorebreak and rip current check is favourable; shad and bait activity remain the main focus.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

Low 02:44 — 0.82 m · High 09:12 — 1.28 m · Low 15:39 — 0.91 m · High 22:28 — 1.31 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR

Sunrise 06:08 · Sunset 17:44 · Moonrise 01:34 · Moonset 11:32 · Waning Crescent, 38% illuminated

SUNDAY — 6 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 15.1–17.9°C
  • Rain: 45% maximum probability; approximately 3.8 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (53°), maximum approximately 14.7 km/h; gusts to 31.7 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.58–1.98 m, period 9.0–9.9 seconds; direction mainly southeast (145°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.28–1.94 m, period 8.1–8.6 seconds; direction mainly southeast (152°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR in suitable conditions. The modelled sea state is lower than Friday and Saturday, but the swell remains significant. Prioritise sheltered beaches and protected structure; avoid assuming a lower wave model means safe rock fishing.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

Low 05:32 — 0.85 m · High 12:19 — 1.34 m · Low 18:39 — 0.85 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR

Sunrise 06:07 · Sunset 17:45 · Moonrise 02:36 · Moonset 12:39 · Waning Crescent, 27% illuminated

Major: 06:36–08:36 and 18:36–20:36. Minor: 11:39–13:39 and 02:36–04:36 (continues into Monday).

MONDAY — 7 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 15.3–18.9°C
  • Rain: 47% maximum probability; approximately 6.3 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (36°), maximum approximately 27.6 km/h; gusts to 56.2 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.60–3.00 m, period 9.6–12.9 seconds; direction mainly southeast (141°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.20–2.38 m, period 8.5–13.4 seconds; direction mainly south-southeast (168°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL and deteriorating. A renewed swell and stronger gust potential arrive late in the issue window. The early period may be more manageable than later conditions, but reassess the sea before fishing and expect exposed water to deteriorate.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • Recent public KZN fishing updates reported shad in fair numbers along the coast, with first light favoured, according to a 7-day-old Kingfisher Kloof / Kingfisher Daiwa update.
  • A recent Angling Times South Africa result reported confirmed sardine activity around Scottburgh during the Ocean Festival, while sardines were also seen further south near Mdumbi. This is useful regional context, but it is not a same-morning Region 1 catch count.
  • A separate recent public report described the sardine action as continuing along the South Coast, with 36 crates landed at Marina Beach. Marina Beach is outside Region 1, so this is not treated as a direct Upper South Coast observation.
  • Shad remain the principal practical shore-fishing focus. Check local bait presence, water colour, current and beach reports before selecting a mark; no live verified catch tally was available for Amanzimtoti–Scottburgh at issue time.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather and marine figures are Open-Meteo model guidance for the Scottburgh representative point and may vary between Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh and individual beaches. Wave and swell values are model estimates, not local buoy readings. Tides are Surfline predictions displayed for the nearby Durban tide port; Surfline notes that accuracy varies with distance from the spot. Astronomical sun and moon data are calculations for the Scottburgh coordinates. Solunar periods are calculated around lunar transit, moonrise and moonset and are not a guarantee of fish activity.

Fishing observations are compiled from recent publicly readable media and social-media reports, not live catch verification. Private or unavailable groups were not accessed. Check shorebreak, rip currents, wind, access and official warnings before fishing or launching, and follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.
