KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 1

5-DAY WEATHER, MARINE & FISHING OUTLOOK

Coverage: Upper South Coast — Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh (-30.2869, 30.7042).

Issue window: Thursday through Monday, 10–14 September 2026.

Issued: Thursday, 10 September 2026 at 04:00 SAST.

Issue key: REGION1-THURSDAY-2026-09-10

WINDOW AT A GLANCE

Thursday: The best general marine window of this issue, with lighter wind and moderate modelled swell, subject to local checks.

Friday–Sunday: Wind, showers and moderate swell produce variable conditions. Early protected-water sessions are more promising than exposed fishing.

Monday: A marked deterioration is modelled, with waves up to 3.48 m and gusts up to 67 km/h. Treat exposed coastal activity as potentially unsafe if conditions verify.

THURSDAY — 10 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 15.3–24.7°C
  • Rain: 0% maximum probability; approximately 0.0 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (37°), maximum approximately 10.8 km/h; gusts to 27.4 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.44–2.02 m, period 7.4–8.0 seconds; direction mainly east (84°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.20–1.74 m, period 5.9–6.5 seconds; direction mainly east (77°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR to GOOD where locally safe. Lighter winds and a moderate modelled swell offer the best opening of this issue. The open coast still has surge potential, so assess the shorebreak and access before fishing exposed structure.

FRIDAY — 11 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 17.5–22.7°C

  • Swell: approximately 0.88–1.26 m, period 5.0–11.0 seconds; direction mainly southeast (126°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR early; becoming MARGINAL if wind builds. The swell is smaller than earlier in the week, but wind and gusts increase. A new-moon early session in protected water is the more favourable plan; reassess exposed marks as the breeze strengthens.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • East Coast Radio and Vinesh Soogreem reported that spring fishing was responding along the KZN coastline. On the South Coast, garrick, kingfish and quality bottom fish were continuing to feature, with Aliwal Shoal producing action whenever weather windows allowed.
  • The same report said central-coast shad were still leading catches, while kob and garrick were active when conditions improved. This is broader KZN context and not a live, verified same-morning Upper South Coast catch tally.
  • Recent public search results also referenced sardine movement and baitfish activity, but no confirmed current sardine netting or catch report for the Amanzimtoti–Scottburgh section was available at issue time.
  • For Region 1, watch first light, bait presence, water colour, current and local sea state before selecting a mark. Use the smaller swell and lighter wind on Thursday as the clearest opportunity in this issue, subject to on-site conditions.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather and marine figures are Open-Meteo model guidance for the Scottburgh representative point and may vary between Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh and individual beaches. Wave and swell values are model estimates, not local buoy readings. Tides are Surfline predictions displayed for the nearby Durban tide port; Surfline notes that accuracy varies with distance from the spot. Astronomical sun and moon data are calculations for the Scottburgh coordinates. Solunar periods are calculated around lunar transit, moonrise and moonset and are not a guarantee of fish activity.

Fishing observations are compiled from current publicly readable reporting, including East Coast Radio and Vinesh Soogreem, not live catch verification. Private or unavailable groups were not accessed. Check shorebreak, rip currents, wind, access and official warnings before fishing or launching, and follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.
