Soak up the South Coast sun and follow the Greatest Shoal on Earth
Famously known across the globe as the 'Greatest Shoal on Earth', the sardine run is the annual migration of massive sardine shoals that move into KwaZulu-Natal waters in the winter months between June and August.
The enormous shoals of migrating fish are called 'bait balls', luring an incredible diversity of ocean predators. The aerial antics of dolphins in pursuit make for spectacular viewing.
Winter in Southern KZN used to be a well-kept secret, but recently the sardine run has become a popular draw card for visitors to escape the winter. The Sardine Festival, taking place in various locations along the South Coast from June to August, promises unforgettable experiences with a full programme of entertainment involving marine, beach, cultural and music activities.
