KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 1

5-DAY WEATHER, MARINE & FISHING OUTLOOK

Coverage: Upper South Coast — Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh (-30.2869, 30.7042).

Issue window: Monday through Friday, 7–11 September 2026.

Issued: Monday, 7 September 2026 at 04:00 SAST.

Issue key: REGION1-MONDAY-2026-09-07

WINDOW AT A GLANCE

Monday–Tuesday: A sizeable, long-period swell remains in the water. The coast is exposed and unsettled despite generally moderate wind.

Wednesday–Thursday: Swell and wave period ease, with Thursday offering the most favourable general marine window if local conditions confirm safe access.

Friday: A new-moon day with smaller swell but stronger wind and gust potential. Early protected-water fishing is the more sensible option.

MONDAY — 7 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 14.1–20.0°C
  • Rain: 50% maximum probability; approximately 0.8 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (34°), maximum approximately 19.7 km/h; gusts to 40.3 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.60–2.72 m, period 11.4–14.6 seconds; direction mainly southeast (162°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.24–2.70 m, period 8.4–12.9 seconds; direction mainly southeast (167°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL — IMPROVING LATER. A long-period swell and elevated energy persist. The early period is exposed and unsettled; protected water may improve later, but inspect the shorebreak and rips before fishing.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

High 00:53 — 1.40 m · Low 07:14 — 0.70 m · High 13:37 — 1.52 m · Low 19:49 — 0.64 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR

Sunrise 06:07 · Sunset 17:45 · Moonrise 03:29 · Moonset 13:50 · Waning Crescent, 17% illuminated

Major: 07:37–09:37 and 19:37–21:37. Minor: 02:29–04:29 and 12:50–14:50.

TUESDAY — 8 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 13.9–22.0°C
  • Rain: 0% maximum probability; approximately 0.0 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (31°), maximum approximately 24.2 km/h; gusts to 49.0 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 2.08–2.32 m, period 7.5–11.3 seconds; direction mainly southeast (125°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.26–2.10 m, period 5.6–10.7 seconds; direction mainly southeast (149°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL. Dry weather does not remove the marine risk: the open coast retains a sizeable swell. Choose sheltered water and avoid exposed ledges if the surge is pushing over the platform.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

High 01:54 — 1.58 m · Low 08:04 — 0.49 m · High 14:21 — 1.74 m · Low 20:32 — 0.46 m

SUN, MOON & SOLUNAR

Sunrise 06:05 · Sunset 17:45 · Moonrise 04:15 · Moonset 15:00 · Waning Crescent, 9% illuminated

Major: 08:35–10:35 and 20:35–22:35. Minor: 03:15–05:15 and 14:00–16:00.

WEDNESDAY — 9 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 13.3–23.1°C

  • Wind: mainly northeast (35°), maximum approximately 22.0 km/h; gusts to 45.7 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.88–2.14 m, period 6.9–7.6 seconds; direction mainly east (86°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.06–1.64 m, period 5.4–6.7 seconds; direction mainly east (82°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR in protected water; MARGINAL exposed. A shorter, lower swell is forecast, but the open coast remains active. This is the most usable marine day so far if local conditions confirm a safe beach, rock platform or launch site.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

High 02:35 — 1.77 m · Low 08:43 — 0.34 m · High 14:57 — 1.92 m · Low 21:07 — 0.27 m

  • Waves: approximately 1.50–2.00 m, period 7.1–7.4 seconds; direction mainly east (81°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.28–1.74 m, period 5.7–6.7 seconds; direction mainly east (77°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR to GOOD where locally safe. Lighter winds and a moderate modelled swell offer the best general window of this issue, especially around protected water. Continue to check surge and the unusually low tide before fishing shallow structure.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • A recent public KZN fishing update reported that shad were still providing good action along the central coast, with garrick and kob also featuring in recent catches. This is regional context, not a verified same-morning Upper South Coast catch tally.
  • A recent Sardine News search result stated that sardines were around again in 2026, with nettings at Glenmore and Margate. These locations are south of Region 1; treat the information as broader KZN South Coast context rather than a direct Amanzimtoti–Scottburgh report.
  • Another recent public update said sardines were moving quickly north and might reach Scottburgh, but this was a forward-looking observation rather than confirmed netting or catches within Region 1.
  • Shad remain the practical first-light target to watch for locally. Check bait presence, water colour, current and beach conditions before selecting a mark; no live verified catch tally was available for Amanzimtoti–Scottburgh at issue time.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather and marine figures are Open-Meteo model guidance for the Scottburgh representative point and may vary between Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh and individual beaches. Wave and swell values are model estimates, not local buoy readings. Tides are Surfline predictions displayed for the nearby Durban tide port; Surfline notes that accuracy varies with distance from the spot. Astronomical sun and moon data are calculations for the Scottburgh coordinates. Solunar periods are calculated around lunar transit, moonrise and moonset and are not a guarantee of fish activity.

Fishing observations are compiled from recent publicly readable media and social-media reports, not live catch verification. Private or unavailable groups were not accessed. Check shorebreak, rip currents, wind, access and official warnings before fishing or launching, and follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.
