KZN South Coast Region 3 Fishing & Weather Report — 16–17 September 2026

Fishing Report SA

KZN South Coast Region 3

Lower South Coast: Shelly Beach to Margate

KZN South Coast Region 3 Fishing & Weather Report — 16–17 September 2026

Representative location: Shelly Beach, KwaZulu-Natal

Coverage: Shelly Beach, Uvongo, Margate and the Lower South Coast between Shelly Beach and Margate

Issued: Wednesday, 16 September 2026 at 05:00 SAST

Overall outlook

A deteriorating two-day marine and weather window is forecast. Wednesday is warm but windy, with a strong southwesterly component, rising seas and showers possible. Thursday is much cooler, with a high probability of heavy rain and thunderstorms, strong winds and significantly larger swell. Treat both days as poor for exposed shore fishing and potentially unsafe for small craft; reassess against official warnings and local conditions.

Wednesday, 16 September 2026

Weather & Marine

Temperature: 15.3–25.4°C

Rain: 63% maximum probability; about 0.6 mm modelled.

Wind: predominantly southwest (about 223°), up to 34 km/h with gusts near 69.5 km/h.

Waves and swell: maximum wave about 2.14 m from east-southeast (116°), period 9.6 s; swell about 1.64 m from east (98°), period 7.9 s.

Assessment: windy and building; exposed rocks, ledges and small-craft operations require particular caution.

Solunar Times

Activity rating: Average.

Major: 02:29–04:29 and 14:59–16:59

Minor: 08:10–09:10 and 22:49–23:49

Sunrise / sunset: 05:56 / 17:52

Moonrise / moonset: 08:40 / 23:19

Moon phase: Waxing crescent, approximately 27% illuminated according to the tide table.

Tides — Shelly Beach

Low 00:01 (-0.09 m) · High 06:03 (1.22 m) · Low 12:04 (-0.02 m) · High 18:14 (1.25 m)

Fishing Focus

If conditions are locally safe, the 06:03 high and 14:59–16:59 major period are the useful daylight references. Shad can be considered around moving water and structure, with garrick, kingfish or kob only conditional possibilities. Avoid exposed ledges and do not launch or fish offshore solely on this forecast.

Thursday, 17 September 2026

Weather & Marine

Temperature: 15.4–17.9°C

Rain: 100% maximum probability; about 70.5 mm modelled. Thunderstorm risk is included in the weather code.

Wind: predominantly southwest (about 221°), up to 33 km/h with gusts near 60.1 km/h.

Waves and swell: maximum wave about 3.36 m from southeast (149°), period 9.1 s; swell about 2.84 m from south-southeast (161°), period 7.8 s.

Assessment: very poor marine window; heavy rain, strong gusts and large swell make exposed shore fishing and small-craft activity unsafe without a new local assessment.

Solunar Times

Activity rating: Average, but weather and sea state override the solunar timing.

Major: 03:51–05:51 and 15:49–17:49

Minor: 08:53–09:53 and 23:49–00:49 (continues into 18 September)

Sunrise / sunset: 05:55 / 17:52

Moonrise / moonset: 09:23 / 00:19 (moonset continues into 18 September)

Moon phase: Waxing crescent, approximately 36% illuminated according to the tide table.

Tides — Shelly Beach

Low 00:28 (0.04 m) · High 06:29 (1.09 m) · Low 12:29 (0.14 m) · High 18:37 (1.09 m)

Fishing Focus

No fishing opportunity should be inferred from the 15:49–17:49 major period while the model predicts heavy rain, gale-force gusts and 3.36 m waves. Wait for conditions to settle and check official warnings, beach conditions and access before targeting shad, garrick or kob.

Current public fishing observations

  • The accessible Kingfisher public reports index checked on 16 September still lists 27 August 2026 as its newest KZN fishing report.
  • Kingfisher's general South Coast guidance identifies garrick as a major attraction, with kingfish and shad offering sport from beaches and rocky points, but this is not a current Shelly Beach–Margate catch log.
  • Current searches returned no independently verifiable, town-specific Shelly Beach–Margate catch, netting, sardine or fish-sales report for this run. Search results were mainly general tourism, property, event and tide material.
  • No current public sales locations or prices were verified.

Sources and limitations

Weather values are a Shelly Beach point forecast from Open-Meteo; waves and swell are from its Marine Weather API. Tides, sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, moon phase and solunar periods are from the public Shelly Beach Tideschart fishing table.

Forecast grids can differ from conditions at a particular beach, reef, point or launch. Wave height is modelled and does not describe every breaking wave. The Open-Meteo forecast and Tideschart values differ by a few minutes for some astronomical times; figures are reported by source rather than reconciled as measured observations.

No live buoy, beach patrol, launch-master or official local observation was available. This report is not an official warning. Check South African Weather Service alerts and local conditions before making any fishing or boating decision.

KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 2

WEDNESDAY–THURSDAY FISHING, WEATHER & MARINE OUTLOOK — 16–17 SEPTEMBER 2026

Coverage: Central South Coast — Pennington to Port Shepstone.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh.

Prepared: 16 September 2026, 04:00 SAST.

OVERALL OUTLOOK

Wednesday: Moderate surf early, building wind and larger secondary swell during the afternoon and evening. The sea becomes increasingly unsuitable for exposed shore fishing and small craft later in the day.

Thursday: Cool, rougher conditions with persistent 5.5–7 ft wave faces and a long primary swell. The solunar rating is poor and exposed fishing or launching is not recommended.

WEDNESDAY — 16 SEPTEMBER 2026

WEATHER & MARINE

  • Temperature: approximately 19–26°C through the surf forecast day.
  • Rain: no material rain signal was visible in the accessible surf forecast; confirm the latest local weather before leaving.
  • Wind: light early, increasing sharply from about 28 mph (45 km/h) at 14:00 and 30 mph (48 km/h) at 17:00, remaining strong into the evening.
  • Wave face: approximately 4.5–5.5 ft early-to-late afternoon, with 4.5 ft shown in the evening.
  • Primary swell: about 6.4–7.0 ft at 10 seconds early and up to 9.5 ft at 7 seconds by evening; direction was not exposed in the source export.
  • Sea temperature: approximately 21.2°C.

Fishing assessment: The early window is the least adverse, but rapidly strengthening wind and rising secondary swell make exposed rocks, ledges and launches unsafe-looking later. Do not rely on the morning tide if conditions deteriorate.

SOLUNAR TIMES

  • Activity rating: Average.
  • Major period 1: 02:37–04:37.
  • Minor period 1: 07:41–09:41.
  • Major period 2: 14:58–16:58.
  • Minor period 2: 22:15–00:15 (continuing into Thursday).
  • Sunrise / sunset: 05:54 / 17:49.
  • Moonrise / moonset: 08:40 / 23:14.
  • Moon phase: Waxing Crescent, approximately 27% illuminated.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH POINT

  • Low: 00:01 — approximately -0.09 m.
  • High: 06:03 — approximately 1.22 m.
  • Low: 12:04 — approximately -0.02 m.
  • High: 18:14 — approximately 1.25 m.

FISHING FOCUS

Shad, kob and garrick remain logical South Coast targets around bait and moving water. If a genuinely sheltered early-morning position fishes safely, work the tide change conservatively; avoid exposed rock platforms once the wind and swell build.

THURSDAY — 17 SEPTEMBER 2026

WEATHER & MARINE

  • Temperature: approximately 15–16°C through the surf forecast day.
  • Rain: the accessible surf forecast did not display a rain value; conditions are cool and overcast-looking in the model output. Check the latest local forecast.
  • Wind: approximately 16 mph (26 km/h) early, easing to 8–10 mph later, with gusts up to 24 mph early.
  • Wave face: approximately 5.5 ft through daylight, increasing to about 7 ft in the evening.
  • Primary swell: approximately 7.8–8.9 ft at 8–9 seconds; direction was not exposed in the source export.
  • Sea temperature: approximately 21.2°C.

Fishing assessment: Poor practical conditions for exposed shore fishing and small craft. The wave face stays large despite lighter afternoon wind. Wait for a safer marine window rather than chasing the solunar periods.

SOLUNAR TIMES

  • Activity rating: Poor.
  • Major period 1: 03:23–05:23.
  • Minor period 1: 08:23–10:23.
  • Major period 2: 15:47–17:47.
  • Minor period 2: 23:11–01:11 (continuing into Friday).
  • Sunrise / sunset: 05:52 / 17:50.
  • Moonrise: approximately 09:23; moonset was not displayed in the accessible daily source. The weekly tide source confirms the moonrise but does not display a Thursday moonset.
  • Moon phase: First Quarter Moon, approximately 36% illuminated.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH POINT

  • Low: 00:28 — approximately 0.04 m.
  • High: 06:29 — approximately 1.09 m.
  • Low: 12:29 — approximately 0.14 m.
  • High: 18:37 — approximately 1.09 m.

FISHING FOCUS

Use the day for tackle preparation or sheltered estuary/harbour planning rather than exposed surf. If conditions are locally much calmer than the open-coast forecast, shad and kob around safe structure remain plausible targets, but verify the actual shore break and escape route first.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • A public report surfaced this week describing images taken among sardine shoals near Scottburgh, with sharks pursuing bait balls. This is an encouraging bait/predator indicator, but the accessible post does not provide a verified catch log, exact beach, date/time or quantified shoal size.
  • Public reporting also indicates that no further reports of dead or dying sardines had been received since 3 September while the DFFE investigation continued. This is a public-status report, not confirmation that sardines are absent from the region.
  • The latest detailed KingFisher South Coast guidance previously located reported garrick, kingfish and shad as relevant targets, with Sardine Run effects influencing movements. Current local catches should be verified on arrival.
  • No verified current netting count, sardine sales location or local sardine price was found for this edition.

Public sources: South Coast Herald public news page; public Scottburgh sardine/shark observation surfaced in search results; KingFisher KZN report.

SOURCE LIMITATION

Scottburgh is used as a representative point for the wider Pennington-to-Port Shepstone region. Surf data are from the Black Rock/Scottburgh-area forecast and tide data are from Scottburgh Point; local beaches can differ substantially. The surf source's text export does not expose swell direction. The accessible Scottburgh weather forecast page did not return its full current forecast table in this run, so temperature, wind, swell and rain details are based on the current accessible surf model and are approximate planning data.

The solunar site did not expose all daily astronomical fields in its HTML export; Thursday moonset is therefore explicitly unresolved rather than invented. Public observations are open-source indications only, not guaranteed catches. Conditions can change quickly, and this report is not a navigation product or official weather warning.

  • These are regional observations, not guarantees for individual beaches or ledges.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS & SAFETY

Weather and marine values are current Open-Meteo model guidance for Port Edward and an offshore point. Tide and solunar times are Port Edward predictions from Tides4Fishing. Forecasts are model output, not observations, and local conditions can differ or change rapidly.

Inspect the actual beach, ledge, river mouth or launch and check official warnings. Never let a favourable tide or solunar period override sea-state and access safety.

CURRENT PUBLIC OBSERVATIONS

No independently verified same-morning catch, netting or species report was found for the requested areas. Public search returned the Go Fish Zululand Classic 2026 update and a Mapelane tide/surf listing, but not a verified current catch log.

NETTING, SIGHTINGS, SALES & PRICES

No verified current netting report, fish sighting, sales location, fish/bait/tackle price or catch-market price was found. Absence of a public report does not mean absence of fish.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS & SAFETY NOTICE

Weather/rainfall and wind are Open-Meteo model guidance. All three weather areas use nearby grid guidance. Wave/swell figures are Open-Meteo marine-model estimates from a regional offshore point, not live buoy data or exact surf-zone observations. Tides are Tideschart St Lucia reference predictions; local mouth, current, sandbar and estuary levels may differ. Moon/sun values are astronomical calculations. Solunar periods after the current day are calculated planning windows, not guarantees of fish activity.

Check current sea state, rips, shorebreak, surge, lightning, access, estuary mouth status and official warnings before fishing or launching. Follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations. This is not an official SAWS warning.

KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 1

5-DAY WEATHER, MARINE & FISHING OUTLOOK

Coverage: Upper South Coast — Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh (-30.2869, 30.7042).

Issue window: Monday through Friday, 14–18 September 2026.

Issued: Monday, 14 September 2026 at 04:00 SAST.

Issue key: REGION1-MONDAY-2026-09-14

WINDOW AT A GLANCE

Monday: Unsafe-looking exposed-coast conditions, with large waves, strong gusts and rain risk.

Tuesday–Wednesday: A possible improvement, especially Wednesday and in protected water, but residual swell and wind require local checks.

Thursday–Friday: Conditions deteriorate sharply, with heavy rain, increasing swell and very strong gusts. Friday is modelled as the most hazardous day.

MONDAY — 14 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 18.7–24.3°C
  • Rain: 66% maximum probability; approximately 0.2 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (38°), maximum approximately 34.7 km/h; gusts to 69.5 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 2.32–3.32 m, period 7.5–8.4 seconds; direction mainly east (92°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.14–2.00 m, period 7.3–10.0 seconds; direction mainly east-southeast (117°)

Marine/fishing rating: POOR on exposed coast. Strong wind, gusts and large waves make exposed rocks, surf zones and small-craft activity unsuitable unless local conditions are demonstrably safe. Protected-water options still require caution.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

  • Waves: approximately 1.86–3.08 m, period 8.1–8.8 seconds; direction mainly east (91°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.78–2.66 m, period 6.6–7.3 seconds; direction mainly east (86°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL to POOR on exposed coast. Wind eases substantially, but residual swell remains large and rain is possible. Protected water may offer a window; exposed marks should be judged by the actual shorebreak and surge rather than the lighter wind alone.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • The latest publicly readable KZN fishing coverage located for this issue reported that South Coast garrick, kingfish and quality bottom fish continued to feature, with Aliwal Shoal producing action whenever weather windows allowed.
  • The same wider KZN report described baitfish activity attracting predators and noted that shad, kob and garrick were active in suitable conditions. These are regional observations, not a verified same-morning catch tally for every Upper South Coast mark.
  • No independently verified same-day Amanzimtoti-to-Scottburgh catch report or confirmed sardine-netting update was available at issue time. Treat baitfish or sardine references as unconfirmed locally unless observed by anglers on site.
  • Given the forecast, prioritise safety over fishing effort. Wednesday appears the most plausible opportunity in this five-day window, subject to the actual shorebreak, wind, visibility and access.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather and marine figures are Open-Meteo model guidance for the Scottburgh representative point and may vary between Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh and individual beaches. Wave and swell values are model estimates, not local buoy readings. Tides are Surfline predictions displayed for the nearby Durban tide port; Surfline notes that accuracy varies with distance from the spot. Astronomical sun and moon data are calculations for the Scottburgh coordinates. Solunar periods are calculated around lunar transit, moonrise and moonset and are not a guarantee of fish activity.

Fishing observations are compiled from current publicly readable reporting, not live catch verification. Private or unavailable groups were not accessed. Check shorebreak, rip currents, wind, access and official warnings before fishing or launching, and follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.

FISHING FOCUS

The report closes with a clear deterioration in marine conditions. The attractive solunar periods do not offset the large swell and gust threat.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • The latest detailed KingFisher KZN report located was dated 27 August. It said the South Coast remained productive when conditions lined up, with garrick a major attraction and kingfish and shad offering sport along beaches and rocky points; it also noted lingering Sardine Run effects on fish movements.
  • A North Coast Courier public update reported a 54 kg kob and a late sardine revival before rough seas sent anglers ashore; it said pockets of sardines were spotted being harassed by predators off Margate.
  • The Witness reported on 25 August that sardines were seen at Glenmore Beach and Margate Beach, followed by activity off Port Edward where two nets were pulled. It stressed that sardine activity is unpredictable along the coast.
  • No same-morning public catch log for each Region 4 mark was verified. These observations are regional indicators, not guarantees for individual beaches or ledges.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather values are current Open-Meteo model guidance for Port Edward and marine values are current Open-Meteo Marine model guidance from an offshore point near Port Edward. Forecasts are model output, not observations; local conditions may differ and forecasts can change between runs.

Tide and solunar times are Port Edward predictions from Tides4Fishing. Sunrise, sunset and moon illumination were cross-checked against Timeanddate astronomy data. Tide heights are fishing references and are not suitable for navigation.

Public fishing information is observational and dated. Inspect the actual beach, ledge, river mouth or launch and check official warnings. Never let a favourable tide or solunar period override sea-state and access safety.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • No independently verified, same-morning catch log specifically for St Lucia Estuary, St Lucia beach or Mapelane was found in the public results checked for this issue.
  • A current public result from Advantage Tours St Lucia concerns Francois Rossouw being named captain of the SADSAA Protea U/21 team and identifies activity from the waters of St Lucia, but it does not provide a catch report or local conditions.
  • Public search results also returned general or unrelated fishing material, but no verifiable current catch numbers, sizes or species for the three requested areas.
  • Evidence status: observations are incomplete; do not interpret the absence of a public report as evidence of no fish.

NETTING, SIGHTINGS, SALES LOCATIONS & PRICES

Netting: no verified current netting report found.

Fish sightings: no current, independently verified sighting report found for the requested three areas.

Sales locations: no verified current bait or fish-sale location found in the sources checked.

Prices: no current verified fish, bait or tackle prices found; no price is published.

SOURCE LIMITATIONS

Weather and rainfall figures are Open-Meteo model guidance. All three requested weather areas resolve to the same nearby weather grid cell, so small local differences are not represented. Wave and swell values are Open-Meteo marine-model estimates, not live buoy observations; the beach and Mapelane requests resolve to a regional offshore grid point rather than an exact surf zone, beach or launch.

Tides are Tideschart predictions for St Lucia used as a common reference. Estuary levels, currents, sandbars and mouth conditions can differ locally. Moon and sun times are astronomical calculations for the St Lucia area. Thursday’s solunar periods are from the current Tideschart guide; later periods are calculated around the astronomical transit, opposing period, moonrise and moonset and are not guarantees of fish activity.

Public observations can be delayed, anecdotal or incomplete. No live estuary level, flow, salinity, water temperature, mouth status or official same-morning catch bulletin was available for this run.

Always check current sea state, rip currents, shorebreak, access and official warnings before fishing or launching. Follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.

KZN SOUTH COAST REGION 1

5-DAY WEATHER, MARINE & FISHING OUTLOOK

Coverage: Upper South Coast — Amanzimtoti to Scottburgh.

Representative forecast point: Scottburgh (-30.2869, 30.7042).

Issue window: Thursday through Monday, 10–14 September 2026.

Issued: Thursday, 10 September 2026 at 04:00 SAST.

Issue key: REGION1-THURSDAY-2026-09-10

WINDOW AT A GLANCE

Thursday: The best general marine window of this issue, with lighter wind and moderate modelled swell, subject to local checks.

Friday–Sunday: Wind, showers and moderate swell produce variable conditions. Early protected-water sessions are more promising than exposed fishing.

Monday: A marked deterioration is modelled, with waves up to 3.48 m and gusts up to 67 km/h. Treat exposed coastal activity as potentially unsafe if conditions verify.

THURSDAY — 10 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 15.3–24.7°C
  • Rain: 0% maximum probability; approximately 0.0 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (37°), maximum approximately 10.8 km/h; gusts to 27.4 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.44–2.02 m, period 7.4–8.0 seconds; direction mainly east (84°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.20–1.74 m, period 5.9–6.5 seconds; direction mainly east (77°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR to GOOD where locally safe. Lighter winds and a moderate modelled swell offer the best opening of this issue. The open coast still has surge potential, so assess the shorebreak and access before fishing exposed structure.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

High 03:10 — 1.89 m · Low 09:16 — 0.18 m · High 15:29 — 2.04 m · Low 21:39 — 0.18 m

Sunrise 06:03 · Sunset 17:47 · Moonrise 05:29 · Moonset 17:13 · Waning Crescent, 1% illuminated

Major: 10:17–12:17 and 22:17–00:17. Minor: 04:29–06:29 and 16:13–18:13.

FRIDAY — 11 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 17.5–22.7°C
  • Rain: 18% maximum probability; approximately 0.1 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly south-southwest (200°), maximum approximately 21.8 km/h; gusts to 44.6 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 1.40–1.70 m, period 8.1–9.4 seconds; direction mainly southeast (143°)
  • Swell: approximately 0.88–1.26 m, period 5.0–11.0 seconds; direction mainly southeast (126°)

Marine/fishing rating: FAIR early; becoming MARGINAL if wind builds. The swell is smaller than earlier in the week, but wind and gusts increase. A new-moon early session in protected water is the more favourable plan; reassess exposed marks as the breeze strengthens.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

  • Swell: approximately 0.88–1.20 m, period 7.7–10.8 seconds; direction mainly south-southeast (169°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL. Cloud and showers are possible, with a moderate swell and moderate wind. Fish only if the local sea state, visibility and access remain comfortable; avoid committing to exposed ledges in rain or surge.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL to FAIR in protected water. The forecast remains unsettled, with showers and a rising upper wave range. Sheltered water may fish, but exposed surf and rock platforms require a fresh local check immediately before starting.

TIDES — SCOTTBURGH

Major: 12:34–14:34 and 01:34–03:34. Minor: 05:59–07:59 and 19:17–21:17.

MONDAY — 14 SEPTEMBER 2026

  • Temperature: 18.7–24.6°C
  • Rain: 27% maximum probability; approximately 0.0 mm expected
  • Wind: mainly northeast (39°), maximum approximately 32.5 km/h; gusts to 67.0 km/h
  • Waves: approximately 2.24–3.48 m, period 7.4–8.3 seconds; direction mainly east (85°)
  • Swell: approximately 1.18–1.98 m, period 6.5–9.0 seconds; direction mainly east (99°)

Marine/fishing rating: MARGINAL to POOR on exposed coast. A significant deterioration is modelled: larger waves, stronger wind and gusts. Protected-water decisions must be conservative; exposed surf, rocks and small-craft operations may be unsuitable if the forecast verifies.

CURRENT PUBLIC FISHING OBSERVATIONS

  • East Coast Radio and Vinesh Soogreem reported that spring fishing was responding along the KZN coastline. On the South Coast, garrick, kingfish and quality bottom fish were continuing to feature, with Aliwal Shoal producing action whenever weather windows allowed.
  • The same report said central-coast shad were still leading catches, while kob and garrick were active when conditions improved. This is broader KZN context and not a live, verified same-morning Upper South Coast catch tally.
  • Recent public search results also referenced sardine movement and baitfish activity, but no confirmed current sardine netting or catch report for the Amanzimtoti–Scottburgh section was available at issue time.
  • For Region 1, watch first light, bait presence, water colour, current and local sea state before selecting a mark. Use the smaller swell and lighter wind on Thursday as the clearest opportunity in this issue, subject to on-site conditions.

Fishing observations are compiled from current publicly readable reporting, including East Coast Radio and Vinesh Soogreem, not live catch verification. Private or unavailable groups were not accessed. Check shorebreak, rip currents, wind, access and official warnings before fishing or launching, and follow current size, bag and seasonal regulations.
